Northwest Health offering free diabetes programs During Diabetes Awareness Month

Screenings on the 13th and Seminars on the 15th
Nov. 5, 2018 – Northwest Health will be offering free diabetes screenings on Tuesday, Nov. 13, in conjunction with Diabetes Awareness Month. Additionally, two free seminars are being offered on Thursday, Nov. 15, one in English and the other in Spanish.
The screenings, which will include a blood glucose check (finger stick) and a diabetes risk assessment, will take place at six urgent care centers at the following times:

More than 100 million U.S. adults are now living with diabetes or prediabetes, according to Dr. Gregory Spears, a board-certified family medicine practitioner.
“When not treated, diabetes can lead to blindness, heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, impotence and loss of limbs,” Spears said. “Prediabetes, if not treated, often leads to type 2 diabetes within five years. Nearly 1 in 4 adults living with diabetes – 7.2 million Americans – don’t even know they had the condition. And, only about 1 in 10 with prediabetes knows they had it.”

Dr. Spears, who speaks both English and Spanish, will be featured in two free seminars on Thursday, Nov. 15, the first at noon in English at Northwest Medical Center-Bentonville, 3000 Medical Center Parkway in Bentonville (Classroom A). The other in Spanish will be at 6 p.m. at Northwest Medical Center-Springdale, 609 W. Maple Ave. in Springdale (Tower II Large Conference Room). Dr. Spears will provide information on how to prevent diabetes as well as how to improve management of the disease.
Pre-registration is not necessary for the diabetes screenings on Nov. 13.
People are more likely to develop type 2 diabetes if they have any of these risk factors:
- are overweight or obese
- are age 45 or older
- have a family history of diabetes
- are African American or Hispanic/Latino
- have high blood pressure
- have a history of gestational diabetes or gave birth to a baby weighing 9 pounds or more
- are not physically active
Because of the increased diabetes risk to Hispanics, Northwest Health has partnered with Univision Arkansas to promote the screenings. Univision Arkansas is the only Spanish-language television station in the state of Arkansas.
