May is Women’s Health Month
5/9/2025
TUCSON, AZ (May 9, 2025) – Women’s Health Month, observed annually in May (beginning on Mother’s Day) is the perfect time for women in every season of life to prioritize the health and well-being of their bodies and minds. It’s common for women to think of others’ health first – but their unique wellness concerns and challenges are just as important.
In the medical world, it’s commonly said that “women are not small men.” Female reproductive and sexual health concerns are the first matters that come to mind – but they’re not the only ones. That’s why women – moms or not – need to stay especially aware of their own physical, emotional, mental, and social health.
Women have a higher risk than men of developing certain diseases and conditions, including cancer, so it’s important for women to ask their healthcare providers about the medical tests they may need – especially screenings for breast, cervical and ovarian cancer; osteoporosis; and cardiovascular disease.
The last item on that list is very important. Most women don’t get the recommended amount of physical activity, which can lead to health problems like obesity, weak muscles, brittle bones, high blood pressure, and many more. It’s good to aim for about 30 minutes of moderate physical activity every day – walking counts – in addition to a balanced diet, sufficient sleep, very little alcohol, and no smoking.
In general, women tend to suffer from anxiety and major depression more so than men. Work/life balance, as well as caregiving responsibilities for children and/or parents, can be stressful and time-consuming, and often affect well-being and general outlook. In addition, hormonal fluctuations – especially during adolescence, pregnancy, and menopause – can be challenging to address without medical advice.
So, this Women’s Health Month, please care for yourself with the same love you do for others. As a start, make an appointment with a primary care provider at Northwest Healthcare – get to know our Internal Medicine providers and our Family Medicine providers.
