Free HeartCheck Health Fairs being offered by Northwest Health in Bentonville and Springdale

(SPRINGDALE, AR) – Feb. 12, 2019 – Free screenings, risk assessments and mini-seminars by physicians are being offered during the 2019 HeartCheck Health Fairs being sponsored this month by Northwest Health in conjunction with American Heart Month. Co-sponsored by the American Heart Association, two fairs are being held 8-11:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 23 at Northwest Medical Center-Bentonville and Northwest Medical Center-Springdale.
In addition to free screenings, risk assessments and seminars, staff will also lead tours of the two hospitals’ cardiac catheterization labs where life-saving diagnostic and interventional procedures are performed. Those wanting to take full advantage of the free blood screening tests should fast (no food or drink except water or black coffee) prior to coming.

According to Dr. Ashu Dhanjal, a Northwest Health cardiologist who serves on the board of the local American Heart Association, “Heart disease remains the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States as well as being one of the costliest chronic diseases. And, unfortunately, Arkansas has the sixth highest death rate from cardiovascular disease in the country. We are trending in the wrong direction in a variety of health indicators, including obesity, diabetes, stress and exercise. At our free heart fairs, Northwest Health will be providing resources to help people reduce their risks for heart disease.”

Northwest Medical Center-Springdale is also one of fewer than 50 U.S. hospitals that is part of the National Cardiogenic Shock Initiative (CSI), working with other major health systems to increase survival in patients with acute myocardial infarction complicated by cardiogenic shock (AMICS). The National CSI is a single-arm, multicenter study designed to assess the feasibility of whether outcomes in cardiogenic shock can be improved by using standardized best practices including inserting a special heart pump to protect the patient during a percutaneous coronary intervention.
