Our Nationally-Accredited Geriatric ERs at Northwest Health
Going to the emergency room is a stressful experience at any age, but especially for seniors. That’s why we’ve introduced an environment designed just for older patients – a nationally-accredited geriatric emergency department at Northwest Medical Center – Bentonville.
The staff has been specially trained and accredited to treat geriatric patients and we built the ER in Bentonville with distinct features and equipment to help in the diagnosis, evaluation and treatment of health issues specific to seniors.
Team members – including emergency physicians as well as staff members – have developed a more comprehensive approach to caring for older patients, including adding services as well as focusing on concerns that can help reduce future hospital stays and assist with care transitions.
The geriatric ER offers specialized training and private patient rooms designed for seniors including:
- Physician with geriatric-designed specialty training (at our Springdale location)
- Lower access beds in treatment rooms
- Additional hand rails throughout the ER
- Patient education in larger fonts for easier reading
- Nurses accredited with geriatric emergency nursing education
- Screenings for dementia
- Physical therapy consultations, if needed
- Hearing assisted devices available
