Stroke Care
When a patient comes to the hospital with stroke symptoms, it’s crucial to make a proper diagnosis quickly in order to begin treatment to minimize the effects of a stroke. The stroke care team at Northwest Health delivers potentially life-saving care for ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes, and can perform treatment options such as providing embolizing agents (clotting medications) delivered by catheter to stop blood flow resulting from hemorrhagic stroke or thrombolytic therapy to deliver clot-dissolving medicine to treat ischemic strokes.
Northwest Medical Center in Bentonville and Springdale have earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® as an Advanced Primary Stroke Center along with the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s (AHA/ASA) Heart-Check mark, both symbols of quality from the respective organizations. The Heart-Check mark can only be displayed by hospitals that have met all requirements set by the heart and stroke associations. Siloam Springs Regional Hospital is certified as an Acute Stroke Ready Hospital also by The Joint Commission.
Northwest Medical Center - Bentonville received the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines® – Stroke Gold Plus quality achievement award in addition to the American Heart Association’s Target: Type 2 Honor Roll award.
Northwest Health has partnered with the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences Institute for Digital Health & Innovation (IDHI) to provide life-saving emergency care for stroke patients in the region. IDHI uses a high-speed video communications system to help provide immediate, life-saving treatments to stroke patients 24 hours a day. This real-time video communication enables a stroke neurologist to evaluate whether emergency room physicians should use a powerful clot-busting drug within the critical time period following the first signs of stroke.
The IDHI Stroke Program is a partnership between UAMS, the state Department of Human Services and 56 other Arkansas hospitals. For more information, visit the IDHI website.
Following a stroke, patients can continue their rehabilitation in the acute inpatient rehabilitation unit, available at Northwest Medical Center - Springdale. There to help individuals regain their independence, this multidisciplinary team provides caring, personalized assistance to help patients meet their goals.
