(BENTONVILLE, AR) – June 27, 2019 – As the leading provider of Stop the Bleed training in the region, Northwest Health is encouraging people to learn how to save a life by offering another free “Stop the Bleed” class. Northwest Medical Center - Bentonville will host the free training class at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 9.
“Stop the Bleed” is a nationwide campaign to empower individuals to act quickly and save lives by stopping severe bleeding. Northwest Health is this region’s leading provider for Stop the Bleed classes, with more than 2,500 people trained in 47 classes in the last year. The classes help to further the goal of the program’s sponsor, the American College of Surgeons, in training everyone in the U.S. about what to do during a bleeding emergency.
This free course will teach participants how to identify the source of bleeding, look for life-threatening injuries and learn basic life-saving interventions. These interventions include bleed-control using direct pressure, gauze packs and tourniquets. Every participant will have the opportunity to perform each skill during the course. The course instructor is Velvet Reed-Shoults, MHA, MBA, BSN, RN, CEN, TCRN, CBIS, System Trauma Program Manager and EMS Outreach Director for Northwest Health.
“It is critically important to quickly stop blood loss,” said Dr. Joe Olivi, Medical Director for Trauma Services for Northwest Health. “A person who is bleeding can die from blood loss within five minutes. Uncontrollable bleeding is the No. 1 cause of preventable death from trauma. Those nearest to someone with a bleeding injury can make a life-saving difference if they are adequately trained to provide care to the injured person.”
