podcastCT Scan of the Chest
Detailed information on computed tomography of the chest, including the reasons and preparation for the procedure, how the procedure is performed, and after care.
Since 2005, we've provided you diagnostic imaging that is faster, clearer and can lead to more accurate treatment.

The Phillips Brilliance CT 64-slice provides a powerful diagnostic tool, which is revolutionizing the way clinicians diagnose, treat, and manage cardiovascular disease.

The 64-slice computed tomography scanner has four times as many detectors as a typical multi-detector CT scanner, combines unrivaled image quality with remarkable speed. It can produce detailed pictures of any organ in a few seconds and provide sharp, clear, three-dimensional images, including 3-D views of the blood vessels, in an instant.

The 64-slice scanner can gather a high-resolution image of a heart, brain or a pair of lungs in about five seconds. A scan of the whole body, (in search of a blood clot, that has become a source of emboli) takes about 30 seconds.

The technology has been particularly exciting for studying the beating heart, providing the first clear non-invasive images of the heart and its major vessels. The scans can be timed to use only images gathered between contractions, so that the heart and its vessels can be seen without the blurring caused by motion.

Benefits of the 64 Multi-Slice CT Scanner include:

  • Faster scan times
  • Higher resolution
  • Patient comfort and convenience improved with scanning times reduced by 40-50%
  • Three different stroke evaluations in three minutes
  • May eliminate need for multiple tests and invasive procedures
  • Will soon Integrate with Cath Lab to make 3D imaging instantly available for procedures

Computed TomographyCT (computed tomography), or CAT scan, uses highly sophisticated X-ray equipment to obtain image information from different angles around the body. The computer processes the information to show a cross-section of body tissues and organs. The x-ray source of the CT machine rotates around you to get anatomical pictures from many angles that, when viewed together, give the physician a better overall picture of your body.

CT imaging is useful because it can image various types of tissue—lung, bone, soft tissue and blood vessels—with immense precision. Using specialized equipment and expertise to create and deduce CT scans of the body, radiologists can fluently diagnose abnormalities such as cancers, cardiovascular disease, infectious disease, trauma and musculoskeletal disorders.

Because it makes available detailed, cross-sectional examination of all types of tissue, CT is one of the finest tools for investigating the chest and abdomen. It is one of the favored methods for detecting various cancers, including lung, liver and pancreatic cancer, because the image permits a doctor to verify the presence of a tumor and measure its size, precise location, and the extent of the tumor's involvement with other nearby tissue. CT examinations are often used to plan and properly administer radiation treatments for tumors, to guide biopsies and other minimally invasive procedures, and to plan surgeries.

CT can reveal even extremely diminutive bones, as well as immediate tissues such as muscle and blood vessels, making it invaluable in diagnosing and treating spinal problems and injuries to effected skeletal structures. In cases of extreme trauma, CT can quickly identify injuries to internal organs. CT can also play a significant role in the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of vascular diseases that can lead to stroke, kidney failure, or death.
