What happens with a patient of the Inpatient Acute Rehabilitation Unit at Northwest Medical Center:

  • 1:1 therapy 15 hours a week. The intensity of the therapy sets the rehabilitation unit apart from other facilities that provide therapy at a lesser level for optimal recovery.
  • An important part of your integration back into the community is having your meals out of bed. We encourage you to eat lunch and dinner in the dining room.
  • Your length of stay in the rehab unit is determined by how quickly the goals are met which have been established by you and your rehab care team. During your stay, the rehab care team holds a weekly team conference to discuss your progress achieving your goals, your continued stay and any needs you may have at discharge.
  • During rehab, you get dressed daily and work with the therapy staff on daily living activities, such as eating, grooming, bathing, showering, dressing, and transfers.

Visits from family and friends are very important and encouraged for your emotional well being and recovery. You and your rehab care team can set a visitation schedule that allows for visits yet maximizes your therapy sessions. Your family or caregiver may participate in caregiver training with the therapist before your discharge. Caregiver training will be coordinated and scheduled ahead of time by your rehab care team. Your care is coordinated by the Rehabilitation Medical Director who is a Physiatrist, and works directly with your rehabilitation team to coordinate your rehabilitation needs. Physiatrists are physicians who specialize in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and are trained to diagnose, treat, and direct a rehabilitation plan that provides the best possible outcomes for the patients. Physiatry not only employs the usual tools of medicine, but also uses physical agents and therapeutic exercise in the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of disorders that produce pain, impairment, and disability.
